What you can actually read in five minutes
"Five minutes" sounds like nothing, which is exactly why people skip it. So we counted. All 32 of the well-known passages below fit inside five minutes of unhurried reading - the longest of them, James 1 at 543 words, takes about 4 minutes. Psalm 23, at 112 words, takes under one.
How these were measured
Word counts are from the World English Bible, a public-domain translation, fetched on 2026-09-14. The range in the last column assumes 130 to 180 words a minute - a pace for reading Scripture slowly enough to notice it, not for skimming a news article. Your own translation will differ by a few per cent; the order of magnitude will not.
Nothing here is a reading plan with a schedule attached, and there is no plan to sell you. It is a list of doors that happen to be short.

Why five minutes is the unit
In Firstfruits, five minutes is the first threshold: the point at which reading turns into one credit, and one credit turns into unlocked time. It was chosen because it is short enough that "I do not have time" stops being true, and because the table above says a psalm fits inside it.
How it works explains the rest of the thresholds - there are 8 of them in a day, widening as they go, so that one long sitting cannot bank the whole day.
