Frequently asked questions

How do I change my blocked list?

Open Firstfruits and go to Settings, then choose the apps and categories you want shielded. Firstfruits hands that picker straight to Apple's own Family Controls screen, so your choice is made through Apple's system UI, not stored or seen by us. You can add or remove apps at any time, and the change applies the next time a shield would otherwise trigger.

How does the emergency unlock work, and does it break my streak?

If you genuinely need your phone and don't have credit to spend, an emergency unlock in the app lifts the shield right away. It is not hidden, and it is not punished: using it does not reset your credit balance and does not break your streak. Firstfruits is built to trust you with your own phone - the emergency exit exists precisely so that the app never becomes a lock you can't get out of.

Why do credits reset overnight at 4:00 AM?

Firstfruits works on a daily rhythm: give the first part of your day, then the rest is yours. Unspent credit resets at 4:00 AM so each day starts fresh, rather than letting credit pile up indefinitely or carry over in a way that would make the daily habit optional. 4:00 AM was chosen specifically so the reset lands overnight, well after a normal evening and before a normal morning, rather than in the middle of either.

Why can't the app show me my real usage numbers?

Apple's Screen Time API is deliberately privacy-preserving: it does not hand apps like Firstfruits a live feed of your usage. Instead, it only reports threshold crossings - for example, that a period of Bible app usage has crossed a set length. Firstfruits keeps its own ledger of the credit that produces, and shows you that ledger, but it cannot display second-by-second usage numbers because Apple's framework never gives any app that data in the first place.

A shield isn't lifting even though I have credit. What do I do?

First, force-quit and reopen the blocked app - shields occasionally need the app to restart to pick up a fresh unlock window. If that doesn't help, open Firstfruits and confirm your credit balance is what you expect; if it looks wrong, use the emergency unlock so you're not stuck, then email us at support@getfirstfruits.app with what app was shielded and roughly when it happened. That detail is what lets us reproduce it.
